(WSVN) — A Florida high school teacher is facing criticism from a student’s mother after writing “WT- is this?” on an assignment.Melinda Smith said she was shocked when she saw the uncensored acronym written across the top of her son’s paper when he handed her his science homework.“It wasn’t anything about not getting the credit. It was more so the language about what they’re writing to a student,” said Smith. “That was very inappropriate and not acceptable for a teacher whatsoever.”Smith is now calling for the teacher at Rutherford High School in Panama City to be held accountable for her actions.“I think for sure she needs to be reprimanded,” said Smith. “I believe that something should be placed in her file.”Coy Pilson, the school’s principal, said they are taking the necessary steps to deal with the incident.“Once we were notified, I notified district officials,” said Pilson, “and our HR has been involved, and they’re currently investigating the situation.” last_img read more

Cover Price Experiments

first_imgSome of us may remember back in 2007 when celebrity lifestyle magazine OK! made the decision to increase its cover price. Like a copycat younger sister, Bauer Publishing followed suit. But after more than two years of solid newsstand performance, Bauer’s Life & Style and In Touch took a tumble, dropping 30 percent and 27.7 percent in overall paid circulation and 30.2 percent and 28.7 percent in single copy sales, respectively, in the first half of 2008, according to ABC’s Fas-Fax survey. A Bauer spokesperson attributed this to “celebrity weeklies increasing their prices across the board, resulting in a 10 percent decline in newsstand sales for the first half of this year.”OK!, however, saw single copy sales increase 19.4 percent and verified circulation up 11.8 percent during the first half of 2008, after upping its cover price to $2.99 in 2007. Being “in sync with what readers are looking for” is key to the magazine’s success, says OK! general manager Kent Brownridge. “It’s all a perceived value question.” When OK!’s price increased again to $3.49 in mid-2008, the magazine experienced no decline in newsstand sales. Are increased cover prices really the culprit in Bauer’s newsstand slide? Brownridge offers that Bauer’s cover prices were “amazingly, dramatically low,” and that in his opinion, they are now at the proper cover price of $2.99; high former sales were a result of “ridiculously low [cover] price[s].” While this may be old news, “sales on newsstands have been dropping for reasons other than just cover price,” says Active Interest Media COO and group publisher Andrew Clurman. Here, publishers discuss what factors, other than cover prices, allow titles to stay ahead.‘Newsstand Darwinism’TAM Communications owner Buzz Kanter cites “Newsstand Darwinism” as the main component of sales: only the strong and swift to react to the market will survive. In his own overcrowded field of automotive and motorcycle magazines, Kanter expects as much as one third of the titles to fold in the coming year. Wholesalers and retailers, he thinks, will promote category leaders, while weeding out those titles that can’t keep up.In 2008, Active Interest Media raised cover prices on Backpacker and Blackbelt from $3.99 to $4.99 and $4.99 to $5.99, respectively. “Cover price increases contribute to the fall, but value also plays a great part in sales. As the economy becomes tighter, people are more selective in what they’re buying,” says Clurman. He determines cover price by looking at the category, competitive titles and where the market is. Clurman also considers which way sales are trending. “If you think you’re below the competition, increase the cover price,” he says.Kanter’s Harley-Davidson focused magazine, American Iron, has experimented with bumping cover prices, resulting in no sales fall off, as well as lowering it to offer better value to readers, and decent profits to wholesalers and retailer partners. American Iron has remained at its cover price of $5.99 since early 2008. The cover price for RoadBike, Kanter’s smaller circulation magazine focusing on import bikes, is “much less aggressive,” only raising its cover price a total of $2—from $2.99 to $4.99—over the past decade. In Clurman’s experience, lower prices have never lifted sales. “We haven’t gone down to $.99, but we’re selling niche publications to a self-selecting audience. They’re not a market heavily influenced by a $.99 or $1 difference.”  2009 DecisionKanter jokes that it doesn’t take six PhDs and a Ouija board to make a decision on newsstand price. “We’ve found that American Iron’s single copy sales are relatively flat, but virtually all of the competing titles are significantly down,” he says. In 2009, Kanter has decided to let cover prices ride. Clurman cites Backpacker and Blackbelt’s sales as flat in 2008, and has also made the decision not to increase cover prices in 2009. Brownridge’s intention for OK!? “We won’t raise it in near future. It’s right where it should be.”last_img read more

Pursuing his own line and pace

first_imgLooked at from one angle, the six months of Narendra Modi’s tenure may be a cause of disappointment for some. For the corporate sector, for instance, the absence of ‘big ticket’ reforms is bound to detract from the prime minister’s go-getter image. The business houses may not have said anything as yet about their dissatisfaction, but it is clear by now that Modi is not an ideologically-driven right-winger like Ronald Reagan or Margaret Thatcher.?? Also Read – Gateway of criminal justiceInstead, he evidently likes to pursue his own line and at his own pace. He will not be hustled, therefore, into drafting a hire-and-fire labour reforms policy which is favoured by industrialists, nor into a return to land acquisition laws reminiscent of the 1894 rules which have now been scrapped.??What is more likely is that he will tweak these laws, including those on environment, and not opt for drastic changes. In this respect, Modi is a reformer, not a radical.??Any expectation, therefore, that his party’s majority in the Lok Sabha will make him ride roughshod over the existing rules and regulations will not be fulfilled.?? Also Read – Turning a blind eyeOne reason why such dramatic changes have been expected since Modi appeared on the scene like a ‘rock star’, as even the foreign media describe him, is the pent-up frustration in the last years of the previous government among both businessmen and ordinary people caused by the stalled reforms and policy paralysis. It was hoped, therefore, that Modi’s changes would be in the nature of a no-holds-barred recourses to a fast-growth path.??Since this hasn’t been the case, the belief is that he is as much of a pragmatist as any other politician who will not like to unnecessarily overturn the apple cart.??As a result, while avoiding major changes, the prime minister is currently focussing on what can be deemed small things, such as toilets, cleanliness, e-governance, encouraging the underprivileged to open bank accounts and the celebrities as well as the MPs to ‘adopt’ villages. The last venture has even persuaded a well-known Communist economist to mock the projects as being aimed at turning the people into ‘mendicants’.?? There is also another kind of disappointment for some people with Modi. It is the result of the fact that there hasn’t yet been what Mani Shankar Aiyar called the ‘Godhra moment’. According to the former Congress MP, Modi is waiting for such an outbreak of communal violence to reveal his real self just as Hitler used the Reichstag fire to impose one-party rule on Germany.??Although the recent riots in Trilokpuri and the communal tension in Bawana on the outskirts of Delhi have been seen as examples of the local foot-soldiers of the saffron brigade fishing in troubled waters, especially with next year’s elections to the Delhi assembly in mind, there haven’t, mercifully, been any major incident.??What is more, the likes of Yogi Adityanath and Sakshi Maharaj have not only fallen silent, they have desisted – or have been prevented – from carrying on their earlier vicious propaganda on ‘love jihad’ in Maharashtra on the eve of the polls as their followers had threatened to do. It is not impossible that Modi is more serious about his proposed 10-year moratorium on sectarian animosity than what his hotheaded followers had assumed.??It is noteworthy that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief, Mohan Bhagwat, did not mention the phrase, ‘love jehad’, in his customary Vijaya Dashami speech as he did on earlier occasions. Nor did he set any deadline for the construction of the Ram temple, or say that all Indians are Hindus.??Interestingly, the BJP has indicated that it will go soft on the question of scrapping Article 370 of the Constitution which confers a special status on Jammu and Kashmir.Evidently, the hopes which the party entertains of scoring an unlikely victory in the impending assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have persuaded it to dilute one of the key items on its pro-Hindu agenda. Not only that, the BJP has even said that ‘Islam will prosper’ under its rule, a claim which is likely to baffle both Hindus and Muslims, especially the bigoted among them.??There is little doubt, therefore, that Modi has decided to follow a path of moderation which cannot but have a calming effect on the saffron brotherhood. From the standpoint of at least curbing, if not ridding society of any innate communal poison, this evidence of sobriety can be considered to be one of the major features of his first six months in office. Its value is much higher than any achievement, or lack of it, in the economic field.??That the country is advancing even in the economic sector is however evident from the projection of a 6.3 percent growth rate next year by Morgan Stanley. If the trend continues, then Modi can further consolidate his position at the national level even if there are setbacks like the possibility that the BJP may flounder in Maharashtra because of its failure to get a majority in the state legislature.??One reason why Modi’s first six months in office have been relatively trouble free is that the Congress not only continues to remain in the doldrums but also that its ‘internal tensions’, as Rahul Gandhi once said, have not subsided, as was evident from the virtual boycott of the party’s observance of  Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary by party stalwarts like A.K. Antony, P. Chidambaram, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Kamal Nath, Ghulam Nabi Azad. IANSlast_img read more

Factors measured and compared included average force, pressure, breast thickness, breast volume, volumetric breast density and average glandular dose.According to researchers, the lack of consistent guidelines regarding mammographic compression has led to wide variation in its technical execution. Breast compression is accomplished by means of a compression paddle, resulting in a certain contact area between the paddle and the breast, which can result in varying levels of discomfort or pain. On current mammography systems, the only mechanical parameter available in estimating the degree of compression is the physical entity of force (daN). Recently, researchers have suggested that pressure (kPa), resulting from a specific force divided by contact area on a breast, might be a more appropriate parameter for standardization. For example, while a large breast requires more force to compress and a small breast requires less force, research suggests that optimal compression pressure should be similar for all breast sizes. This study compared the current compression practice in mammography between two sites in the Netherlands and one in the United States, and investigated whether the compression protocols could be improved by standardization of pressure (kPa) as an objective parameter.  The Dutch dataset comprised 37,518 screening mammographic images (from 9,188 women) obtained from the Dutch national breast cancer screening program. The U.S. dataset comprised 7,171 screening and diagnostic mammographic images (from 1,851 women). All images were analyzed using VolparaAnalytics and VolparaDensity software, so that the various factors could be compared between populations. Large variation in compression was observed for the Dutch and U.S. datasets, with relative standard deviations of 19.6 percent and 41.9 percent for force and 43.1 percent and 50.6 percent for pressure, respectively. Significant differences (p<0.001) were observed for the mean forces and pressures used in both the Dutch and U.S. datasets (i.e. 13.8 daN versus 7.4 daN and 13.7 kPa versus 8.1 kPa, respectively).  As a result of the lack of standardization, extreme pressures were observed in both datasets, resulting in an inability to predict the compression pressure for a given individual.“Now that software like VolparaAnalytics—which enables device-independent cross-comparisons of key mammographic metrics between patient populations—has become available, we may be able to better standardize mammographic compression, which could decrease variation and improve reproducibility; minimize unnecessary pain; and reduce radiation dose and inadequate image quality.  I expect that this will enable the industry to enhance quality control of mammographic compression procedures and help maintain exam quality and patient comfort,” said Gerard J. den Heeten, LRCB Dutch Reference Center for Screening, Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), HealthCanada, the Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA) and CE-marked, VolparaDensity is in use at breast imaging centers worldwide to help radiologists objectively assess density from both digital mammography and tomosynthesis images, helping doctors evaluate who might benefit from additional screening. Highly correlated to breast magnetic resonance (MR) assessments, VolparaDensity automatically generates an objective measurement of volumetric breast density correlated to the American College of Radiology (ACR) breast density categories.VolparaAnalytics is a centralized dashboard that produces configurable reports for management of quality assurance, resource utilization and breast imaging workflow. The software monitors critical elements of the breast imaging process and generates key metrics to help breast imaging centers identify and address potential issues early. VolparaDose provides a standardized measurement of patient-specific dose with consistent results across systems from different manufacturers. For more information: www.volparasolutions.com FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 News | Radiation Therapy | August 15, 2019 First Patient Enrolled in World's Largest Brain Cancer Clinical Trial Henry Ford Cancer Institute is first-in-the-world to enroll a glioblastoma patient in the GBM AGILE Trial (Adaptive... read more News | Colonoscopy Systems | August 06, 2019 Rise in Early Onset Colorectal Cancer Not Aligned With Screening Trends A new study finds that trends in colonoscopy rates did not fully align with the increase in colorectal cancer (CRC) in... read more News | Mammography | August 14, 2019 Imago Systems Announces Collaboration With Mayo Clinic for Breast Imaging Image visualization company Imago Systems announced it has signed a know-how license with Mayo Clinic. QF Rolls Royce keen to settle out of court

first_imgAustralia’s flag carrier is hoping to recoup damages following last year’s mid-air explosion of a Rolls Royce engine resulting in the grounding of Qantas’ entire A380 fleet. At a press conference this morning Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said that while the airline’s insurance is handling the cost of repairing the aircraft, Qantas is still in talks with Rolls Royce over the AU$55 million that was lost as a result of standing down its A380s. Mr Joyce added that despite the carrier receiving legal advice, both parties are keen to come to a commercial agreement outside of court. “We are still in ongoing negotiations with Rolls Royce,” he said. “We don’t want to set a timetable on those negotiations but they are moving forward quite well and both parties are keen to settle.” Mr Joyce added that despite the A380 incident impacting the airline’s profits from the UK, Qantas still managed to achieve double its underlying profit before tax to $417 million for half year ending 21 December 2010.  The now infamous Qantas A380 will be up and running before the end of the year assured Mr Joyce. Fiji stealing forward bookings share from Bali Phuket and Honolulu

first_imgFiji stealing forward bookings share from Bali, Phuket and HonoluluAustralian overseas beach holiday booking patterns have changed as evidenced in the shifts between four of the main destinations. Current booking arrival trends, looking 6 months ahead, show a decline of 24% for Bali, 10% for Phuket and 2% for Honolulu. On the other hand, future booking arrivals to Fiji have increased by 6%.“Unfortunately Bali has gone from bad to worse. Looking back 6 months, Australian arrivals were only down 13% on last year compared to the 24% drop in current booking arrivals for the next 6 months,” said GfK ForwardKeys Account Manager David Beliveau. “This is likely influenced by the recent airline cancellations caused by the volcanic eruptions in July this year.”Conversely, Honolulu saw a large drop in Australian arrivals for the last 6 months, down 13%, however looking 6 months forward the booking arrivals picture is more positive with a decline of only 2% on last year.“Although the $AUD is still not favourable against the $USD, this appears to have had little impact from further deterring Australians from travelling to Honolulu,” continued Beliveau. While total future booking arrivals to Fiji are up 6%, what is interesting is the change in booking size patterns. 2 person bookings are actually down 4% on last year while 4 person bookings are up 19%.“This could suggest a change in perception as more Australians see Fiji as a family destination rather than a couples retreat,” said Beliveau.Comparing the length of stay of 1-8 nights for all four beach destinations, Honolulu has 61%, Bali has 56%, Phuket has 57% and Fiji has 72% of their total future bookings in this range.“While Fiji has grown on last year, Australians tend to spend less time at the destination compared to other international beach holiday destinations likely due to its lesser travelling time,” he concluded.GfK ForwardKeys is a daily aggregation of flight bookings, with a forward outlook up to 12 months and over 5 years of historical data between any two airports in the world.GfK ForwardKeys data as at Sunday, 11 October 2015 for the period Thursday, 1 October 2015 to Thursday, 31 March 2016 versus the same period in 2014.Source = GfK Travel Solutionslast_img read more
