SELECTMEN NEWS Town Discusses Rollout Of Plastic Bag Ban

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — The town’s upcoming plastic bag ban may be nearly three months away, but Wilmington Health Director Shelly Newhouse has already begun her push to inform the public and storeowners of the coming change. In a memo to Town Manager Jeff Hull, which was shared with the Board of Selectmen at its Monday night meeting, Newhouse outlines several steps she’s already taken relative to the rollout of the plastic bag ban.“All retail food establishments have received a notice in their renewal application form reminding them of the plastic bag ban. This went out in December 2018,” reported Newhouse. “Postcards will go out to other major retailers reminding them of the upcoming ban.”Newhouse also wrote up a Q&A for the Town Topics newsletter, the town’s website, and social media, including the town’s Twitter account. Wilmington Apple recently ran this Q&A, which can be read HERE.Newhouse noted she’s getting some assistance from several Wilmington community organizations.“The Wilmington Rotary Club ordered 500 reusable bags and have been giving them out through the Senior Center an the Library. They have 100 bags left, which are earmarked for Deming Way. Their next order will probably be for 1,000 bags,” wrote Newhouse. “The Wilmington Community Fund is working with the Wilmington Farmers Market to distribute bags.”New dog waste bags will be purchased for distribution at designated kiosks, according to Newhouse.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook.
