DISTINCTIV PASSION GOES GATE TO WIRE & TAKES GRADE III, $100,000 LOS ANGELES STAKES BY A NECK UNDER MALDONADO; BONDE TRAINEE HOLDS OFF FAVORED SAN ONOFRE WHILE GETTING SIX FURLONGS IN 1:08 FLAT

first_imgARCADIA, Calif. (May 25, 2015)–Sent to the front by Edwin Maldonado, Distinctiv Passion held off favored San Onofre by a neck to take Monday’s six furlong Grade III, $100,000 Los Angeles Stakes at Santa Anita in 1:08.00.The third choice at 2-1 in a four-horse field of three year olds and up, bounced back from a disappointing 13th place run in a Group I, five furlong turf sprint in Dubai on March 28. With no show wagering, he paid $6.60 and $3.00. Owned by Edward Brown, Jr., Alan Klein and Phillip Lebherz, Distinctiv Passion, a 5-year-old Florida-bred horse by With Distinction, picked up his eighth win from 17 starts and with the winner’s share of $60,000, increased his earnings to $453,660.“This time, he put his ears forward as soon as we left the gate and I didn’t move on him,” said Maldonado. “I knew I had enough to win today. I was just waiting to push the button, waiting on San Onofre. I knew it was going to be a two-horse race.”“The Dubai race was a totally wasted race,” said Bonde. “If you look at all the American horses over there that ran on the turf, they did miserably. On the main track, they did fine…I’m sure you’ll see the horse next in the Bing Crosby (Grade I, six furlongs at Del Mar this summer).”Ridden by Mike Smith, San Onofre, came off a close second in the Grade II, 6 ½ furlong Kona Gold Stakes at Santa Anita April 11, and was thus dispatched as the 4-5 favorite. Breaking from the outside, he sat third early and was second turning for home, two lengths off the winner.“Distinctiv Passion was hard to catch today,” said Smith. “He has unbelievable speed and it’s hard to catch him coming from behind. My horse finished up real well, though. I wish we were going six and a half today.”Trained by Karen Headley, San Onofre finished 1 ¼ lengths in front of Wild Dude and paid $2.80 to place.Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Wild Dude, the actual second choice in the wagering at 2-1, finished 1 ¾ lengths clear of longshot War Academy.Fractions on the race, all set by Distinctiv Passion, were 22.19, 44.48 and 55.95.last_img read more

Final Cut Pro X Tutorial: Working with RED RAW Footage

first_imgLearn the tricks for a smooth RED RAW workflow in Final Cut Pro X.Over the last few years a RAW workflow has gone from being a feature used exclusively by the pros to a viable option for indie-filmmakers and film enthusiasts alike. With new cameras such as the Blackmagic Pocket Camera or the Panasonic GH4, getting RAW footage is a relatively easy process. Namajunas ready for what comes next as UFC’s new superstar

She left Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a battered heap and walked out the 115-pound UFC strawweight champion. With a buzzcut and steely determination that made a hybrid of some sort of Ripley meets Eleven sci-fi character, Namajunas dominated in a flash and thrust herself into the conversation as the new face of UFC.“I was the talk of the town that night,” she said. “I’ve always felt that I was a star. I always knew that I am a star. The only thing that was missing was the belt.” Oh, Namajunas has the belt in the suburban Denver home she shares with fiancee and training partner, Pat Barry. It’s in her closet.“It’s got an energy to it, you know? We want to make sure we don’t too wrapped up in it,” she said. “But we’ll shine it up. Give it some love.”Namajunas has felt nothing but love since winning a title on a card that fans, starting with UFC President Dana White, widely called one of the best in the company’s 25-year history. Namajunas, T.J. Dillashaw and Georges St. Pierre all won belts as challengers.“The UFC in general, we’ve been in kind of a weird spot lately,” she said. “That card is something that doesn’t come by very often. We haven’t seen a card like that in a really long time and it was something special to remember.”UFC has spent the year craving a new box office star that can carry the promotion into 2018 and beyond while stalwarts Ronda Rousey, Conor McGregor and Jon Jones are on the bench. UFC’s promotional push had been all-in on Jedrzejczyk, the Polish fighter who was a win away from matching Rousey with six straight title defenses.ADVERTISEMENT MOST READ Protesters burn down Iran consulate in Najaf PLAY LIST 01:37Protesters burn down Iran consulate in Najaf01:47Panelo casts doubts on Robredo’s drug war ‘discoveries’01:29Police teams find crossbows, bows in HK university01:35Panelo suggests discounted SEA Games tickets for students02:49Robredo: True leaders perform well despite having ‘uninspiring’ boss02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games Namajunas is used to taking the shine off UFC’s brightest female stars.Paige VanZant’s rise into championship contention was chopped when Namajunas choked her out in 2015.Michelle Waterson was pegged as the next one until Namajunas choked her out, too, in April. And Jedrzejczyk? She was never a factor in their fight. Namajunas choked back tears as White placed the championship belt on her shoulder.“I make my environment what I want it to be,” Namajunas said. “I went to her castle where she felt comfortable, where she wanted to be in New York City and I took it from her.”UFC announcer Joe Rogan said a superstar was born in New York.“I hope the UFC realizes, and I think they do, that’s a … star. That’s a real star,” he said this week on his “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast. “She’s a genuinely nice person. When you look like her and you’re 115 pounds and you’re a woman and you (mess) up the Boogeyman, yeah, crowds are going to gravitate to that. If she doesn’t become as a big a star as any other woman in MMA, I would be stunned.”Namajunas said that as champ, she wants to skip the brash trash talk that shot McGregor to mainstream stardom and has been imitated throughout UFC, including by the champions Jedrzejczyk, Michael Bisping and Cody Garbrandt, who all lost at UFC 217.Namajunas, who said she earned the nickname “Thug” as a kid from one of her neighbors, used her post-fightinterview to preach kindness. She also spoke out against the toxic atmosphere she found early in her MMA training at Roufusport. As Namajunas takes a turn trying to steer the women’s division into the future, she hoped she could serve as role model for someone looking for a voice.“Of course I want to leave things, especially negative things, in the past,” she said. “But if it can help somebody overcome something, then I want to make sure it ends up on a positive note. I don’t want to dwell on negative things.”The big negative in New York? Someone played the wrong walkout song. She requested “Sweet Freedom” by Michael McDonald.“They played some Oasis song or something,” Barry said.“It was definitely not my type of music,” Namajunas said.Namajunas planned to take some time off headed into the holidays and had no contender or timeframe in mind for her first title defense. She just knows that next time, everyone will be watching for her.last_img read more

Just seeing reminders of coffee can stimulate us

first_imgSimply looking at something that reminds us of coffee can cause our minds to become more alert and attentive, scientists say. The study looks at an effect called priming, through which exposure to even subtle cues can influence our thoughts and behaviour. “Coffee is one of the most popular beverages and a lot is known about its physical effects,” said Sam Maglio, an associate professor at University of Toronto in Canada. “Much less is known about its psychological meaning – in other words, how even seeing reminders of it can influence how we think,” said Maglio. Also Read – An income drop can harm brain”People often encounter coffee-related cues, or think about coffee, without actually ingesting it,” he said. “We wanted to see if there was an association between coffee and arousal such that if we simply exposed people to coffee-related cues, their physiological arousal would increase, as it would if they had actually drank coffee,” he added. In this case the researchers wanted to explore how simply being exposed to things that remind us of coffee may have an effect on arousal. Across four separate studies and using a mix of participants from western and eastern cultures, they compared coffee- and tea-related cues. They found that participants exposed to coffee-related cues perceived time as shorter and thought in more concrete, precise terms. “People who experience physiological arousal see the world in more specific, detailed terms,” said Maglio.last_img read more

‘US banding together with India, like-minded nations to protect sovereignty of Indo-Pacific’

first_imgWashington DC: The US is “banding together” with nations like India, Australia, Japan and South Korea to ensure that the sovereignty of Indo-Pacific nations are protected and that they are not subjected to any coercion, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said. His comments came days after the Indian Navy participated with the navies of the US, the Philippines and Japan in their first joint naval exercise in the disputed South China Sea, where China is flexing its muscle. You all know this: The distinctive mark of western civilization is the belief in the inherent worth of human beings, with the attendant respect for god-authored rights and liberties.
