Pradhan hands 7 croreth LPG connection under PMUY

first_imgNEW DELHI: Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday handed over the 7 croreth LPG connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Under the scheme, deposit-free LPG connections are provided to poor households and the connections are released in the name of adult women. The scheme was launched on May 1, 2016, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with an initial target of 5 crore, which was later revised upward to 8 crore connections. The 7 croreth connection has been released within just 34 months of the scheme’s launch, which is a spectacular achievement for the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Nearly 69,000 connections are being released per day. There has been a huge jump in LPG coverage in the country, having gone up from 55 per cent in 2014 to 93 per cent. As many as 42 per cent of the total beneficiaries belong to the SC/ ST categories. As per recent data, 82 per cent Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries are going for refilling their cylinders and average refilling is about 6.5 cylinders per beneficiary. Congratulating the women beneficiaries, Pradhan said that they have been the main driving force behind this accomplishment. He said that the Government has not only provided connections to the poor but also distributed happiness to them. The scheme was launched with identification from the SECC list but was subsequently expanded to cover all the poor of the country. Pradhan lauded the efforts of the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), distributors, field-level officers and all other stakeholders.last_img read more

Just seeing reminders of coffee can stimulate us

first_imgSimply looking at something that reminds us of coffee can cause our minds to become more alert and attentive, scientists say. The study looks at an effect called priming, through which exposure to even subtle cues can influence our thoughts and behaviour. “Coffee is one of the most popular beverages and a lot is known about its physical effects,” said Sam Maglio, an associate professor at University of Toronto in Canada. “Much less is known about its psychological meaning – in other words, how even seeing reminders of it can influence how we think,” said Maglio. Also Read – An income drop can harm brain”People often encounter coffee-related cues, or think about coffee, without actually ingesting it,” he said. “We wanted to see if there was an association between coffee and arousal such that if we simply exposed people to coffee-related cues, their physiological arousal would increase, as it would if they had actually drank coffee,” he added. In this case the researchers wanted to explore how simply being exposed to things that remind us of coffee may have an effect on arousal. Across four separate studies and using a mix of participants from western and eastern cultures, they compared coffee- and tea-related cues. They found that participants exposed to coffee-related cues perceived time as shorter and thought in more concrete, precise terms. “People who experience physiological arousal see the world in more specific, detailed terms,” said Maglio.last_img read more

The Buckeyes, which received an automatic bid to the event’s finals because they are among the top four returning dual-meet teams, finished the regular season 11-3 and 5-3 in the Big Ten. The automatic bid finalists were awarded based on their performance and rankings from the 2011-2012 season. OSU sophomore Hunter Stieber, ranked No. 2 in the 141-pound weight class, said that he likes the team’s chances in the postseason. “I feel pretty good,” he said. “Team-wise, I think we’ll be all right. We bounce back pretty well. We’re an older team so it should be good.” The Division I National Duals will feature a new format this year with eight teams in the finals instead of the traditional four. The addition of four automatic bid finalists increases the initial pool of competitors from 16 to 20. The teams that did not receive automatic bids are divided up into four different regions: Cornell University Region: Cornell, Hofstra, Virginia, Nebraska Kent State University Region: Kent State, Oklahoma State, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin Oregon State University Region: Oregon State, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Michigan University of Missouri Region: Missouri, Maryland, Wyoming, Purdue The automatic bid finalists are Ohio State, Iowa, Minnesota and Illinois. Each region will host a one-day competition Sunday. The winners will move on to join the four automatic bid teams at the University of Minnesota for the finals on Feb. 22-23 in Minneapolis. Sophomore 149-pounder Cam Tessari said he is looking to pick up where he left off coming off a big 3-1 win against then-No. 7-ranked sophomore Andrew Alton of Penn State. “I’m excited for it (the National Duals),” he said. “I was a little rocky at the beginning of the season but I think I’m starting to hit my stride.” OSU coach Tom Ryan said there are a few kinks the team needs to work out between now and the tournament, but he has high hopes. “I feel great about this team,” he said. “Up and down the lineup we have good guys. We have to fight a little harder, but we’re going to be ready to go.” Last year, OSU failed to make the finals of the National Duals when it lost to Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. This year, they’ll look to avenge that loss. The Buckeyes’ first match is set to start at 6 p.m. on Feb. 22 at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The finals will conclude Feb. 23. read more

I will not let up until the remaining funds are appropriated for the full statutory PFD. I know Alaskans understand this decision and I appreciate all of your input.” Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享This year’s $1,600 dividend is being direct deposited on Thursday, October 3. Lawmakers instead asked Dunleavy to consider dividends of about $1,600 this year. Last year’s capped payout amounted to $1,600 checks. Dunleavy: “While there are some that support the full statutory formula, unfortunately some do not. In this years budget the Legislature sent me a $1,600 appropriation for the PFD, again not following the statutory formula.”  Governor Mike Dunleavy campaigned on a Permanent Fund dividend for residents paid in line with a longstanding calculation that has not been followed since 2016 as the state has grappled with a budget deficit. Such a dividend would equate to checks of about $3,000 this year. Dunleavy said he considered this a ‘partial PFD payment’ and that the legislature understands their jobs are not finished and they must fix this “as soon as possible”.last_img read more

Taxman chomps away at discounts ecommerce firms face the heat

first_imgEmployees of Amazon India are seen behind a glass bearing the company’s logo inside its office in Bengaluru on August 14, 2015. REUTERS/Abhishek N. ChinnappaE-commerce giants like Flipkart and Amazon have appealed against an income tax order of last year which if implemented would force them to pay tax at a time they are engaged in cut-throat competition for market share in India. The issue involves money spent by e-commerce companies on marketing through deep discounts, an Economic Times (ET) report said on Saturday. So far, these discounts were clubbed by these companies under marketing costs, to which the income tax department had objected in a recent assessment order by pointing out that these costs constitute capital expenditure which may aid future revenues. The income tax department said that by giving discounts the e-commerce companies are creating intangibles which can aid future revenues.Reclassifying discountsThe department felt that such discount-related expenses can’t be classified as marketing costs, and instead, should be reclassified as capital expenditure. Hence, these should not be deducted from revenues, ET reported, adding that this practice has been causing huge losses for e-commerce firms. The companies had approached the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals), Bengaluru, last month after an assessment order of last year asked them to reclassify marketing expenditure as capital expenditure. The assessment orders were passed last year and applied to all e-commerce companies, the report said.If the tax department’s methodology is followed, e-commerce companies could turn profitable and be liable for tax in India, ET said in its report. For, these customer discounts have been classified by e-commerce companies as marketing expenses and deducted from revenue, leading to huge losses on their balance-sheets.Flipkart and Amazon’s appeal was heard last month but the CIT (appeals) did not take an immediate decision.Sanjay Sanghvi, partner (tax) at law firm Khaitan & Co, was quoted as telling ET that the quantum of business expenditure to be incurred is the prerogative of the business concerned to decide. “The Assessing Officer (of income tax) has no say in dictating terms of business to a taxpayer, as to how to run his business. There are enough judicial decisions supporting this proposition,” Sanghvi was quoted as saying. The logo of India’s largest e-commerce firm Flipkart is seen on the facade of the company’s headquarters in Bengaluru on July 7, 2017. REUTERS/Abhishek N ChinnappaA new harassment routeThe newspaper quoted experts as saying that the revenue department’s stand could open a Pandora’s Box for several startups and e-commerce companies as it dictates how entrepreneurs must conduct their businesses.Amit Maheshwari, partner, Ashok Maheshwary & Associates, was quoted in the ET report as saying that if such tax demands are made, then several startups including e-commerce companies and FMCG companies who are in the B2C space will start facing the heat from the tax department and end up being embroiled in litigation.”The taxpayers may have to argue that these expenses are incurred every year and are necessary to run the business and create demand for their services, and without such expenses these startups may just fold up,” Amit Maheshwari, said in the ET report.Online retail giant Amazon has secured approval to stock and sell food and groceries in India, potentially expanding its business in the fast-growing economy where it is in a pitched battle with home-grown rival Flipkart.Reuters had reported last month that Amazon plans to invest $500 million in the food segment, over and above the $5 billion it has already committed to investing in India.Deep customer discounting will play a major role in the company’s strategy to tackle the under-penetrated online grocery market in India which is the traditional preserve of mom-and-pop stores.Venture-funded Flipkart, whose backers include Tiger Global, Tencent Holdings and Microsoft, also plans to move into the groceries space.last_img read more

Hasina terms Khaledas Coxs Bazar visit festive

first_imgPrime minister Sheikh HasinaPrime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday deplored the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia for her “festive and luxurious” visit to Cox’s Bazar in the name of seeing the woes of the Rohingyas.Responding to a question from female parliament member Fazilatun Nesa Bappi in the Jatiya Sangsad, the prime minister said Khaleda Zia’s jubilant and colourful journey with hundreds of motor vehicles, drums and elephants made the people confused whether she went there to attend any matrimony or see the condition of the Rohingya people.“Khaleda Zia’s visit to Cox’s Bazar was seemed to be showdown of her party and they have concentrated on that side,” the premier said, reports BSS.Hasina also blasted Begum Zia for her remarks that the government failed to send back the Rohingyas to Myanmar and carry out relief operation among them.Sheikh Hasina said historically the BNP has no record of standing beside the people during their bad days. She recalled the influx of Rohinghyas in Bangladesh in 1991 saying at that time Awami League reached Cox’s Bazarmuch ahead of the then BNP government to support the Rohingyas.Sheikh Hasina said the Awami League always stands beside people out of its sympathy towards people as part of party’s political commitment which is different from the BNP and Jamaat. The prime minister also said Khaleda Zia has many histories of failure. She failed to foil the election, overthrow the government, wage movement and finally to win in the court to keep occupying her cantonment residence. This is why she always sees failure of the government in everything, the Sheikh Hasina said.last_img read more

Pursuing his own line and pace

first_imgLooked at from one angle, the six months of Narendra Modi’s tenure may be a cause of disappointment for some. For the corporate sector, for instance, the absence of ‘big ticket’ reforms is bound to detract from the prime minister’s go-getter image. The business houses may not have said anything as yet about their dissatisfaction, but it is clear by now that Modi is not an ideologically-driven right-winger like Ronald Reagan or Margaret Thatcher.?? Also Read – Gateway of criminal justiceInstead, he evidently likes to pursue his own line and at his own pace. He will not be hustled, therefore, into drafting a hire-and-fire labour reforms policy which is favoured by industrialists, nor into a return to land acquisition laws reminiscent of the 1894 rules which have now been scrapped.??What is more likely is that he will tweak these laws, including those on environment, and not opt for drastic changes. In this respect, Modi is a reformer, not a radical.??Any expectation, therefore, that his party’s majority in the Lok Sabha will make him ride roughshod over the existing rules and regulations will not be fulfilled.?? Also Read – Turning a blind eyeOne reason why such dramatic changes have been expected since Modi appeared on the scene like a ‘rock star’, as even the foreign media describe him, is the pent-up frustration in the last years of the previous government among both businessmen and ordinary people caused by the stalled reforms and policy paralysis. It was hoped, therefore, that Modi’s changes would be in the nature of a no-holds-barred recourses to a fast-growth path.??Since this hasn’t been the case, the belief is that he is as much of a pragmatist as any other politician who will not like to unnecessarily overturn the apple cart.??As a result, while avoiding major changes, the prime minister is currently focussing on what can be deemed small things, such as toilets, cleanliness, e-governance, encouraging the underprivileged to open bank accounts and the celebrities as well as the MPs to ‘adopt’ villages. The last venture has even persuaded a well-known Communist economist to mock the projects as being aimed at turning the people into ‘mendicants’.?? There is also another kind of disappointment for some people with Modi. It is the result of the fact that there hasn’t yet been what Mani Shankar Aiyar called the ‘Godhra moment’. According to the former Congress MP, Modi is waiting for such an outbreak of communal violence to reveal his real self just as Hitler used the Reichstag fire to impose one-party rule on Germany.??Although the recent riots in Trilokpuri and the communal tension in Bawana on the outskirts of Delhi have been seen as examples of the local foot-soldiers of the saffron brigade fishing in troubled waters, especially with next year’s elections to the Delhi assembly in mind, there haven’t, mercifully, been any major incident.??What is more, the likes of Yogi Adityanath and Sakshi Maharaj have not only fallen silent, they have desisted – or have been prevented – from carrying on their earlier vicious propaganda on ‘love jihad’ in Maharashtra on the eve of the polls as their followers had threatened to do. It is not impossible that Modi is more serious about his proposed 10-year moratorium on sectarian animosity than what his hotheaded followers had assumed.??It is noteworthy that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief, Mohan Bhagwat, did not mention the phrase, ‘love jehad’, in his customary Vijaya Dashami speech as he did on earlier occasions. Nor did he set any deadline for the construction of the Ram temple, or say that all Indians are Hindus.??Interestingly, the BJP has indicated that it will go soft on the question of scrapping Article 370 of the Constitution which confers a special status on Jammu and Kashmir.Evidently, the hopes which the party entertains of scoring an unlikely victory in the impending assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have persuaded it to dilute one of the key items on its pro-Hindu agenda. Not only that, the BJP has even said that ‘Islam will prosper’ under its rule, a claim which is likely to baffle both Hindus and Muslims, especially the bigoted among them.??There is little doubt, therefore, that Modi has decided to follow a path of moderation which cannot but have a calming effect on the saffron brotherhood. From the standpoint of at least curbing, if not ridding society of any innate communal poison, this evidence of sobriety can be considered to be one of the major features of his first six months in office. Its value is much higher than any achievement, or lack of it, in the economic field.??That the country is advancing even in the economic sector is however evident from the projection of a 6.3 percent growth rate next year by Morgan Stanley. If the trend continues, then Modi can further consolidate his position at the national level even if there are setbacks like the possibility that the BJP may flounder in Maharashtra because of its failure to get a majority in the state legislature.??One reason why Modi’s first six months in office have been relatively trouble free is that the Congress not only continues to remain in the doldrums but also that its ‘internal tensions’, as Rahul Gandhi once said, have not subsided, as was evident from the virtual boycott of the party’s observance of  Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary by party stalwarts like A.K. Antony, P. Chidambaram, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Kamal Nath, Ghulam Nabi Azad. IANSlast_img read more
