Search in Skamania County for missing man suspended

first_imgThe search for a missing Gresham, Ore., man near Beacon Rock in Skamania County has been suspended.David Mekvold, 42, remained missing Thursday night, said Undersheriff Dave Cox and Gresham police Sgt. Rick Wilson.Approximately 20 searchers worked Wednesday around a gravel road where a pickup belonging to Mekvold was found about 8:45 p.m. Monday.Working in mixed rain, snow and windy conditions, with temperatures in the mid-30s, they expanded the search area to the south, across the BNSF Railway tracks to the Columbia River, Cox said Wednesday night. With a low cloud ceiling, visibility was too poor for helicopters or other aircraft to operate safely.Seachers also looked for Mekvold on Tuesday.Officials decided to suspend the search on Thursday because there had been no information about his whereabouts, Cox said Thursday night.Mekvold was reported missing to the Gresham Police Department on Monday. After finding his truck in Skamania County, sheriff’s deputies learned about 1:35 a.m. Tuesday that he’d been reported missing. Deputies then called in searchers who looked for him until after nightfall Tuesday.Officials have said all along that they hadn’t heard any indication why Mekvold would go missing, or what his mindset might be.Skamania County sheriff’s officials have now turned the case back to Gresham police.John Branton: 360-735-4513 or [email protected]last_img
