Nabi missed out on becoming the only Afghan bowler to have taken a five-for in a World Cup as rain prevented him from completing his full quota of 10 overs. Nabi finished with figures of 4/30 off his 9 overs but his spell will mostly be remembered by his 5th over wherein he took 3 opposition wickets to derail the Lankan innings. Before Nabi, Shapoor Zadran held the record since he took 4/38 against Scotland in Dunedin during the 2015 World Cup.When Sri Lanka were coasting along at 144/1 at the end of 21 overs, Nabi bowled a phenomenal over in which he took 3 wickets to change the course of the match completely and in Afghanistan’s favour. On the 2nd ball of the over, Lahiru Thirimanne bowled a beauty to sneak through the batsman’s defense. All Thirimanne could manage was an inside-edge dragging it onto the stumps. The very next ball, he could have had the wicket of Kusal Mendis whose edge flew inches past the diving slip fielder. But Nabi accounted for him with the very next ball having him edge to slip in an almost identical fashion as the previous ball. However, the biggest dent was yet to come.Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka veteran and their talisman on many occasions, was the next one in and straightaway defended his first ball of the backfoot. On the last ball of the over, Nabi bowled another arm-ball that took Mathews’ and brushed the wicketkeeper’s gloves before nestling comfortably in Rahmat Shah’s hands at slip.advertisementAnd just like that, Nabi stamped his authority on the biggest stage of the sport, all in a space of six balls. After bowling out Sri Lanka for 201, Nabi said that he had planned to have a slip in place which bore rich dividends for him and his team.”Feel very good, if you see the pitch there is nothing for spinners but I tried my best to loop the ball. Most of the batsmen are left-handers, so that’s good.”Totally a plan (having a slip in place), had a slip in for the new batsman and it worked. We’ll try our best to achieve this total. We’ll try to keep wickets intact in the first ten overs,” Nabi signed off by saying. Also Read | World Cup 2019: How Pakistan defied odds to shock overconfident EnglandAlso Read | Don’t need to answer Kagiso Rabada in a press conference: Virat Kohli on immature commentFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for Sports news, scores and updates.Get real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story?
