Chetan in second round of US Open badminton

first_imgChetan Anand continued his successful comeback when he defeated Jarome Vicolen 21-14, 21-13 to enter the second round of the US Open badminton championships at Orange, California, on Monday. This was the Hyderabadi’s second tournament after a fourmonth injury lay-off.Chetan AnandChetan said that he was moving well and also anticipating play early. “I am satisfied with my movement and what is more important is that I am able to catch the shuttle early. That means I am timing my shots well,” Chetan told Mail Today.Chetan will now meet 13th seed Bruce Leverdiz of France. “Bruce is a tough player and has all the shots in the book. Also I feel that since I have not played much competitive matches of late, I have to be at my best to defeat him. One thing I can draw inspiration from is the fact that I have never lost to him before,” said the Indian shuttler. If Chetan wins against Bruce, he may be in for an ever tougher challenge as he is likely to face top- seeded Indonesian Taufik Hidayat in the third round.Chetan feels that it will be one of the toughest matches he could expect.”Taufik is one of the greatest players of all time. He has a wonderful backhand and can hit winners from almost anywhere on the court. It would be very tough to win against him, especially in the form that he is now in,” he said. Also the fact that he has never managed to defeat the Indonesian in their career meetings seems to weigh on the Hyderabadi’s mind.advertisement”I have never beaten him in our four previous meetings. The best I did was taking a game off him in the Danish Super Series a couple of years back. Let’s see how it goes against him this time,” said Chetan.Meanwhile, the other Indians in the fray at the US Open-Periapalli Kashyap and Gurusai Dutt also advanced. While Gurusai scored a 21-7, 21-17 win over Jamaican Charles Pyne, Kashyap defeated Alex Tyjong of Brazil in straight games 21-10, 21-19. Kashyap will now run into David Obenstoer while Gurusai will cross swords with sixth seed Marc Zwiebler of Germany.- With inputs from PTIlast_img
