first_imgHarry Redknapp has hailed Arsenal’s performance against Manchester United – and claimed the Gunners have every chance of winning the Premier League this season. After an inconsistent start to the season, Redknapp was ready to write off Arsene Wenger’s side as title contenders. But having seen them blitz leaders Manchester United on Sunday with three goals inside the opening twenty minutes, he believes they are now serious candidates to finish top of the pile for the first time in 12 years.Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the former Tottenham boss said: “That first twenty minutes was as good as I have seen. ‘Rodgers is proven in the Championship – he’ll get Chelsea back up in no time!’

first_imgChelsea’s third Premier League defeat in a row left the defending champions in 16th place, three points above the relegation zone after 12 games. The statistics are damning: Chelsea’s results after a dozen matches represent the worst performance by any reigning champions in the Premier League era.It is the club’s worst start to a season since 1978 (worse than when they were last relegated in 1987/88), and the first time they have lost three successive league games since October 1999.Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho had never lost more than six league fixtures in a season in his managerial career, but has now racked up seven losses by the beginning of November.Incredibly, this is relegation form from Chelsea, who may take comfort from the fact that only once in the 123-year history of relegation from English football’s top flight have the defending champions gone down.It couldn’t happen to Chelsea, could it? Probably not, but that hasn’t stopped people from having a laugh at the prospect on social media… 1 Chelsea v Walsall: coming next season in the Championship? last_img read more

‘Great game intelligence’ with a bit of Gerrard, Pogba & Matic – new LFC player profiled

first_imgLiverpool are believed to have snapped up Marko Grujic, so talkSPORT’s Transfer Spotlight has more on the talented teenager…Name: Marko GrujicDate of birth: 13/04/96Born: Belgrade, SerbiaClub: Red Star BelgradePosition: MidfieldWhat’s the latest? It appears Liverpool have beaten off competition from the likes of Anderlecht and Inter to sign Serbia’s highly-rated teenager Marko Grujic. It is being reported the player will sign for the Reds in January, but remain with Red Star until the end of the season. Zeljko Buvac, right hand man of manager Jurgen Klopp, is said to have had a hand in the deal. The lowdown:1) At Red Star Grujic operates in a deep lying role and the way he plays in the middle of the park has seen him likened to some of football’s best, such as Steven Gerrard, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.2) Earlier in the year Grujic revealed Matic had informed him Chelsea were keen on him, but he also went on to explain he was looking at a possible summer departure because he wants to win the season’s Serbia SuperLiga with Red Star.3) Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Serbia-based journalist Vlastimir Stevanovic praised Grujic’s athleticism as well and all round attributes. “He has excellent vision, a great passing game and he possesses great game intelligence,” he said.4) In an interview with Serbia publication Mondo earlier in the year Grujic praised the atmosphere at English stadia and explained that players’ energy levels are boosted with fans so much closer to the action.5) He was a member of Serbia’s victorious 2015 Under-20 World Cup winning team which beat Brazil 2-1 in the final in New Zealand, though he didn’t get on the pitch in that game. What is being said?I think he is much more than a regular playmaker or attacking midfielder. He would be better suited as a winger or behind the striker. I think that he should play on the flanks and closer to goal– Veljko Paunovic, Chicago Fire head coach and under-20 World Cup winning bossVideo evidence: 1 Marko Grujic (no.16) celebrates Serbia’s penalty shoot-out win against the USA last_img read more

Wal-Mart in Maryland must spend more on worker health

first_imgANNAPOLIS, Md. – Maryland legislators voted Thursday to enact a first-in-the-nation requirement that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. spend more on employee health care. The measure, touted as a money-saver for the state-supported Medicaid program, takes effect despite the governor’s veto of the bill. Labor unions have said they are seeking similar legislation this year in at least 30 other states. Supporters of the measure say the retailing giant unfairly takes advantage of taxpayer-funded health care plans because some workers are paid too little for them to afford Wal-Mart’s health insurance. “The taxpayers are giving a health-care subsidy to the largest retailer on earth,” argued Democratic Delegate Kumar Barve. The House and Senate, both controlled by Democrats, both notched the three-fifths margins needed to override a veto last May by Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich. The bill requires companies with more than 10,000 Maryland employees to spend at least 8 percent of their payroll on employee health care or pay the difference into the state’s Medicaid fund. Of the state’s large employers, only Wal-Mart spends less than 8 percent on health care.
