Was I Too Naive Simone Biles Fought with Guilt

In a statement via Twitter on Monday, Jan. 15, 2017, Biles says she is among the athletes sexually abused by a now-imprisoned former USA Gymnastics team doctor.. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell, File)Simone Biles watched as her friends and former Olympic teammates came forward to detail abuse at the hands of a now-imprisoned former USA Gymnastics team doctor.Drawing in part from their strength, the four-time gold medalist acknowledged Monday she is among the athletes who were sexually abused by Larry Nassar.Biles, who won five medals overall at the 2016 Olympics, released a statement via Twitter outlining that abuse. Nassar, who spent more than two decades as a physician at USA Gymnastics while also working at Michigan State University, has admitted sexually assaulting gymnasts, possessing child pornography and molesting girls who sought medical treatment. He was sentenced in December to 60 years in federal prison for possessing child pornography and is facing another 40 to 125 years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting seven girls.Biles, now 20, called Nassar’s behavior “completely unacceptable, disgusting, and abusive, especially from someone whom I was told to trust.” She joins a list of high-profile gymnasts who have come out against Nassar, including six-time Olympic medalist Aly Raisman, 2012 all-around champion Gabby Douglas and two-time Olympic medalist McKayla Maroney.Like her Olympic teammates, Biles detailed abuse by Nassar that he disguised as treatment.“It is not normal to receive any type of treatment from a trusted team physician and refer to it horrifyingly as the ‘special’ treatment,” Biles wrote.Biles is in the beginning stages of a return to competition, a journey that includes visits to the national team’s training center at the Karolyi Ranch north of Houston, where she said the abuse occurred.“It is impossibly difficult to relive these experiences and it breaks my heart, even more, to think that as I work towards my dream of competing in Tokyo 2020, I will have to continually return to the same training facility where I was abused,” Biles wrote.USA Gymnastics initially agreed to buy the Karolyi Ranch in the summer of August 2016, following the retirement of longtime national team coordinator Martha Karolyi, but then backed out of the deal. The national team continues to use the facility while options for a replacement are explored.Biles says she initially wondered if she was to blame.“For too long I’ve asked myself, ‘Was I too naive? Was it may fault?’” Biles wrote. “I now know the answer to those questions. No. No. It was not my fault. No, I will not and should not carry the guilt that belongs to Larry Nassar, USAG, and others.”Feelings… 💭 #MeToo pic.twitter.com/ICiu0FCa0n— Simone Biles (@Simone_Biles) January 15, 2018USA Gymnastics said in a statement it is “heartbroken, sorry and angry” that Biles and other athletes were harmed by Nassar.“USA Gymnastics’ support is unwavering for Simone and all athletes who courageously came forward to share their experiences,” the organization said in a release. “We are our athletes’ advocates. USA Gymnastics will continue to listen to our athletes and our members in our efforts of creating a culture of empowerment with a relentless focus on athlete safety every single day.”The organization has taken several steps in recent months. President and CEO Steve Penny resigned under pressure last March and was replaced by Kerry Perry, who took over on Dec. 1.The organization hired Toby Stark, a child welfare advocate, as its director of SafeSport last summer. Part of Stark’s mandate is educating members on rules, educational programs and reporting. The federation also adopted over 70 recommendations by Deborah Daniels, a former federal prosecutor who oversaw an extensive independent review. That’s not far enough for some. Raisman has urged the organization to remove chairman of the board Paul Parilla among others. Biles, like Raisman, wants USA Gymnastics to take a deeper look at the conditions that allowed Nassar’s behavior to run unchecked for so long.“We need to know why this was able to take place for so long and to so many of us,” Biles said. “We need to make sure something like this never happens again.” read more

PASOK new policy for Greeks of the diaspora

first_img Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram The newly elected Greek government is planning a new policy stance in regards to Greeks abroad, setting as its main goal the improvement of relations between the Greek Diaspora and the motherland and the upgrade of services provided to Hellenes abroad. Government sources, who spoke to Neos Kosmos pointed out that the Papandreou government “will set out to restore the relations between the Greek state and the millions of Greeks living abroad that were undermined by the ineffective policies of the Karamanlis’ governments.”The new cabinet that was announced does not include a position of a Deputy Minister responsible for issues of the Greek Diaspora. DOD Not Shying Away from Preparing for Climate Impacts

first_img Dan Cohen AUTHOR The military is quietly taking steps to address the effects of climate change on its infrastructure, particularly coastal installations vulnerable to rising sea levels, even as the Trump administration has tried to downplay the issue across the federal government. On the surface the Pentagon has limited its use of the phrase “climate change,” but the department’s efforts to respond to weather-related risks have largely continued since President Trump took office, reports the Washington Times. On the Atlantic Coast, for example, Marine Corps leaders say they will consider building a sea wall to protect Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., from rising water levels; on the opposite coast, the Navy has partnered with the city of San Diego to monitor and prepare for sea-level rise. “DOD has not changed its approach on ensuring installations and infrastructure are resilient to a wide range of challenges, including climate and other environmental considerations,” said Pentagon spokeswoman Heather Babb. What has changed is the willingness of senior military leaders to talk explicitly about climate change. “We don’t see them talk about climate change, but we see them talk about ‘resilience’ and the need for enhanced resilience at military bases,” said Jonathan Gensler, the founder of Tennessee-based energy efficiency firm Revive Energy.Photo courtesy of Air National Guardlast_img read more

Bengal govt to come up with more predelivery huts in remote areas

first_imgKolkata: Bengal government aims to set up more ‘pre-delivery huts’ in the far-flung areas, to provide better health care facilities to pregnant women free of cost. The scheme was started by the state government, which was later announced as a model project by the Centre. After seeing the success of the scheme, the state Health department is planning to set up more pre-delivery huts in remote areas.Otherwise known as ‘waiting huts’, these pre-delivery huts have turned out to be extremely beneficial for the pregnant women who often face difficulties in reaching the district hospitals, as they stay in far-off areas. Also Read – Heavy rain hits traffic, flightsThe project was started by the state Health department in the rural areas, following instruction from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who laid enormous emphasis on institutional deliveries in remote areas. It is the Chief Minister’s relentless efforts, that have brought about significant changes in this field. The project was initiated so that expectant mothers from South 24-Parganas and particularly areas surrounded by various rivers, do not face any difficulties in giving birth to their babies. It is not always possible to transport the patients from the farthest corners to the city. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Merc, 2 B’deshi bystanders killedThe main purpose of setting up the ‘waiting huts’ was to reduce infant mortality rate and also the death of mothers before or after delivery. It has often been seen that it becomes difficult for women to travel long distances to reach a health centre for an institutional delivery, as their families fail to pay for vehicles. Even health check-up of expectant mothers belonging to remote areas is not done.Earlier, it was seen that many expectant mothers would die along with their babies, while being transported to a hospital from their native place, due to lack of transportation infrastructure. People had to depend on mechanised boats to ferry a patient to the block primary health centres.Keeping this in mind, the state government is keen on constructing more such huts in the remotest areas. These huts are equipped to keep pregnant women for observation and total care for 7-10 days prior to the expected dates of delivery. The patients in these huts are kept under constant monitoring and are provided with good quality food free of cost.It may be mentioned that the parliamentary committee on the empowerment of women at the Centre has also showed interest in the project. It has been learnt that the Centre has proposed to consider it to be a model project.last_img read more

Selenium 4 alpha quietly released on Maven Repository

first_imgLast month, the team behind Selenium silently slipped in Selenium 4 alpha on the Maven Repository without any official announcement. Alpha release means that developers can start testing out the new updates in the software but are not recommended to use it in production. Selenium 4 is a major release, which was actually planned to ship by Christmas last year, as shared by Simon Stewart, one of the Selenium lead developers and the inventor of WebDriver, at the Selenium Conference India 2018. However, going by the status on SeleniumHQ GitHub repository, we can expect more delay in this release. This situation is very similar to that of Selenium 3.0 release. Back in 2013, Stewart shared that Selenium 3.0 will be released by Christmas, which ended up hitting the market after 3 years of the announcement. “I did say Christmas, but I didn’t specify what year,” he jokingly said in a webinar in 2016. Following are some of the updates in Selenium 4 alpha release: Native support removed for Opera and PhantomJS Starting from this release, the Opera and PhantomJS browsers will not be supported natively as the WebDriver implementations for these browsers are no longer under active development. Since Opera is built on top of the Chromium open source projects, users are recommended to test with the Chrome browsers. PhantomJS users can use Firefox or Chrome in headless mode. Updates for W3C WebDriver Spec Compliance Selenium 4 WebDriver will be completely standardized with W3C. In lieu of this, the following changes are made in this release: Changes to the Actions API This release comes with a revamped Actions API to comply with the WebDriver specifications. The Actions API serves as a low-level interface for providing virtualized device input to the web browser. Currently, Actions is only supported in Firefox natively. Other browser users can use this API by putting the Actions class into “bridge mode”. It will then attempt to translate mouse and keyboard actions to the legacy API. Alternatively, users can continue using the legacy API via the ‘lib/actions’ module. However, it should be noted that the legacy API will be deprecated and will be removed in a minor release once other browsers start supporting the new API. Other changes This release comes with support for all window manipulation commands WebElement.getSize() and WebElement.getLocation() are now replaced with a single method, WebElement.getRect(). A new method, driver.switchTo().parentFrame() method is added To read what else has been updated in this release, check out change doc on Selenium GitHub repository.
