South Africa’s players despondentafter early World Cup elimination

first_imgBy Hugh LawsonLONDON (Reuters) – South Africa’s players expressed bitter disappointment and even embarrassment after their elimination from the World Cup was ensured by their loss to Pakistan at Lord’s on Sunday but they said they would learn lessons and return stronger. The Proteas’ chances of progressing in the tournament evaporated after they logged their fifth loss in seven matches, making it mathematically impossible for them to secure a top-four spot and a place in the semi-finals.“It’s becoming where it’s a little bit embarrassing. We’re trying, but it’s just not good enough. Obviously I’m human as well, so it will keep chipping away at me,” captain Faf du Plessis told reporters after a 49-run defeat at Lord’s.“I’m a very proud player and captain, and playing for South Africa means a lot for me, and the fact (is) that the results we’re dishing out at the moment– you know it’s really, really tough,” he said. The team’s headline bowler, paceman Kagiso Rabada, said the whole team felt like they had failed to play to their usual standard, both on Sunday and throughout the tournament.“Pakistan turned up, and we didn’t,” he said.“We’re very disappointed. We tried so hard at practices and we spoke about what we needed to do, but unfortunately we just couldn’t bring it out into the field of play. And that’s what you have to do in tournaments like this.“We try to prepare, we do our analysis. We come in with a good mindset – it’s just execution is one thing that’s been a question mark for us,” added Rabada.Du Plessis said the team had been running low on confidence as their losses piled up and turning that around rested mostly with each individual player.“For me at the moment, it’s a confidence thing. The guys are playing with low confidence and therefore making more mistakes,” he said.“The responsibility lies with every player to try and make sure that he comes to the park and gives everything, and if confidence is an issue, you need to sort it out yourself.“You know, if I could I would get my wand out and get some runs on the table for our batters. But I can’t, unfortunately.”Rabada and Du Plessis said the team had lessons to learn, and that they would be fighting to get things right next time.“We’ll definitely be back firing, looking to nail some of the things that we wanted to nail in this tournament,” Rabada said.last_img read more

Wilshere Begs Rooney to Join Arsenal

first_imgJack Wilshere believes if Arsenal were to sign England team-mate Wayne Rooney it would strike fear into the hearts of their Barclays Premier League title rivals.Funds of more than £75million are understood to be available for manager Arsene Wenger as he aims to pull together a squad capable of mounting a long overdue sustained assault on the championship. Rooney asked to leave Manchester United at the end of last season but it remains to be seen how the situation will develop with the arrival of new manager David Moyes, his former boss at Everton.Speaking in a question and answer session with www.espnfc.com, Wilshere said: “If it happens, itwould be amazing. He (Rooney) is the type of player who can win you trophies – and just to see his name on the team sheet brings fear to the opposition. We could do with a little more of that.”The Gunners are set to be busy in the summer transfer window, with the confirmation of the free transfer of France Under-21 attacker Yaya Sanogo set to be shortly confirmed now his contract with Auxerre has expired.Arsenal have also been linked with Real Madrid’s £25million-rated forward Gonzalo Higuain and Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who would, like Rooney, both command significant wages.last_img read more

Electronic Single Window project in development phase

first_imgThe Electronic Single Window (ESW) project under the Business Ministry is progressing despite a few hiccups along the way. This was disclosed by Business Minister Dominic Gaskin who explained that the ESW project relies heavily on several agencies to execute the mandate of the scheme. “I do not think there has ever been a project of this type that requires different types of agencies to beBusiness Minister Dominic Gaskininvolved in it.”He noted the cooperation of various agencies is vital to the project’s success, especially since it allows access to an electronic platform, through which they can conduct numerous types of transactions. The ESW is mainly traded facilitation; as such it would involve the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) as the major stakeholder. It will also involve other licensing agencies and agencies that endorse permits or import and export licenses, among others. However, Minister Gaskin indicated that a number of agencies have not yet begun the digitisation process, which poses some challenges in electronic information sharing. Nevertheless, the Minister noted there are other agencies indicating “readiness” towards the project. The ESW project is one that will be loan funded, and the Business Ministry is hoping the funds will be approved by the end of 2018. Minister Gaskin said once the loan is approved “it will speed up the process”.On February 21, the Business Ministry in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank hosted the first ESW workshop with public and private stakeholders at the Pegasus Hotel, with the focus of “Developing a Roadmap to Electronic Single Window in Guyana”.The workshop aimed at identifying and analysing conceptual models and challenges for the implementation and global practices for the development of the ESW in Guyana. The Electronic Single Window aims to expedite and simplify information flows between trade participants and the Government, by bringing meaningful gains to all parties involved in the domestic and cross-border trade.last_img read more
