Los Angeles Lakers’ Byron Scott believes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record staying put

first_imgBryant’s contract that expires following the 2015-16 season ensures he will play 20 years. But Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak recently said Bryant has remained adamant he will not play beyond his contract. Presuming Bryant stays healthy enough to play this season’s remaining 59 games and all 82 games next season, Bryant would need to average 43.28 points per contest to match Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring mark. Abdul-Jabbar averaged 24.6 points in 1,560 games in 20 NBA seasons. He also played fewer than 74 games in only two years. How did Abdul-Jabbar maintain such dominance and longevity?“I’m sure (Abdul-Jabbar) would probably tell you yoga and his martial arts. All that stuff kind of kept him flexible, and his meditating and things like that,” said Scott, who played with Abdul-Jabbar on the Showtime Lakers for six seasons. “At 7-2, the way he could run, especially when he was young, and how wiry he was, he was an unbelievable athlete. I think a lot of people tend to forget that about ‘Cap.’”Scott could hardly forget about the circumstances surrounding Abdul-Jabbar breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s previous league record of 31,419 career points. The Lakers played the Utah Jazz on April 5, 1984 at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas with Abdul-Jabbar only needing 22 points to eclipse Chamberlain. With 8:53 left in the fourth quarter, Magic Johnson fed Abdul-Jabbar on the right baseline. Eventually, Abdul-Jabbar sank a skyhook over Utah’s Mark Eaton.Everything that happened beforehand seemed just as exciting. MINNEAPOLIS >> For this entire 2014-15 Lakers season, it has become a matter of when and not if Kobe Bryant will eclipse Michael Jordan for third place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.More clarity has emerged on this development since Bryant will only need to score nine points when the Lakers (7-16) play on Sunday against the Minnesota Timberwolves (5-17) at Target Center to surpass Jordan’s career 32,692 points. But what happens after that? Well, more than likely Bryant stays there. He will then trail Karl Malone’s 36,928 points and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 38,387 points.“That’s going to stand for a while,” Lakers coach Byron Scott said of Abdul-Jabbar’s record. “I don’t think in our lifetime we’re going to see it being broken. It’s going to be hard for somebody to break that. Someone will have to play 20-plus years to do that.” Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorcenter_img “When we got on the floor, I think everybody was almost keeping count,” Scott said. “Everybody knew what shot it was going to be. Magic made it a point he was going to pass to him.”Meanwhile, Lakers forward Nick Young has said half jokingly he will get the assist on Bryant’s record-breaking shot.“Nick hasn’t passed all year,” Scott said with a chuckle. “How’s he going to be the one who passes to him?”Fair enough. But that scenario at least seems more plausible than anyone surpassing Abdul-Jabbar’s record, including Bryant.last_img read more
