Photo credit: GIS NewsThe 2011/12 National Budget will not make provisions for a voter ID card for Dominica.The United Workers Party has been calling for the introduction of voter ID cards since the last general elections held on December 19th, 2009.But Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says a national ID card is the way forward for government.He says the national ID card is already before Cabinet for approval.“The issue is before the Cabinet and the Cabinet has been engaging the electoral commission through the President to clarify certain matters with regards to that,” he said.Skerrit said government will “not be spending four million dollars on a voter ID Card”.He said government is prepared to “fetch” the money, “but to introduce a national ID card which we believe can be used as a Voter Identification Card”.He said there are several other sectors that need the money that would be spent on the Voter ID cards.“We are not going to spend four million dollars when vendors and bus drivers and taxi operators and tour guides will not be earning a wage for three four months because no cruise ship will be coming to Dominica at this time…we are not going to spend four million dollars when the same people are saying that fishermen and farmers need more money, we need to improve of education and health care…” he said.The commission will be mandated to manage the issuance of the national ID cards, Skerrit explained.Dominica Vibes News Share Tweetcenter_img Share Share 45 Views   one commentlast_img read more
